Texas beats No. 10 Notre Dame 50-47 in 2OT thriller

“We plan on having two really good quarterbacks the rest of the year”, Kelly politically said.

The overtime thriller that was Notre Dame at Texas on ABC scored with viewers on Sunday. Brown (6) is upended by Texas safety Dylan Haines, left, as he goes into the end zone for a touchdown during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in Austin.

Going into the season opener with Note Dame, there were more than a few questions about who would be starting for Texas.

“Swoopes da’ man, bro”, guard Kent Perkins told me before I could say a word to him after the game.

Buechele was the first freshman quarterback to start a season-opener at Texas since Bobby Layne in 1944. “You knew the stage wouldn’t be too big”, Strong said.

The Jayhawks, who host OH next, haven’t won consecutive games since starting 2-0 in 2011 and then losing their last 10 games that season.

The Texas quarterback broke a tackle, burst up the middle and stretched the ball across the line as the Longhorns earned a huge victory for embattled coach Charlie Strong after two losing seasons. Swoopes has been booed by Texas fans the last two seasons and was treated to a chorus of “Swooooooopes” from the Texas-record crowd of 102,315.

“We’re a young group of guys and we had three true freshmen out there at one time in the back end of our defense”, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said during his Monday teleconference.

In Sunday’s 50-47 double-overtime loss, the Fighting Irish’s two-quarterback rotation of redshirt sophomore DeShone Kizer and redshirt junior Malik Zaire was clunky and ineffective. They may not be championship favorites, but Texas (#11, AP) can contend this year. “I just think we’re jumping the gun”.

While the Longhorns may be much improved from a year ago, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and call them the Big 12 champions just yet.

If Notre Dame indeed moves forward with Kizer as its No. 1 quarterback, Kelly said he’ll need to see his backup (in this case, Zaire) approach that role with the right kind of attitude.

“That’s the way it’s going, the playoff system, the games being weighted a certain way”, said Kingsbury. However, no matter how the quarterback situation shakes out, this is an offense that can produce big plays at any moment.

“I think we can make it work”, Strong said Monday.

“I haven’t sat down and talked with to either one of them, so before we do that we don’t have any plans to make any decisions”, Kelly added, via the Score. Including Duvernay and Buechele, nine freshmen saw game action against the Fighting Irish. “But it’s a great start”.

“Notre Dame, who handed it to you past year, [is] coming into your house Sunday night”, the Interstellar star told his alma mater team during a pre-game practice.

The No. 11 ranking is the Longhorns’ highest in the AP Poll since October 2012. Swoopes carried 13 times for 53 yards in the 18-wheeler package (he’s No. 18), looking like a bigger version of Blake Bell and OU’s Belldozer of yesteryear. But Texas finished 5-7 and Heard’s fall was so swift he’s now playing receiver. That coincided with Notre Dame scoring 17 unanswered and taking a 35-31 lead.

Kelly said he had “heated” discussions with game officials asking why the play wasn’t reviewed for a possible penalty. Following Hunter’s departure from the Texas game, the Irish passing attack that had been firing on all cylinders in the third quarter stalled.
