Asked specifically if the United Nations was prepared to wage a humanitarian aid campaign in response to conflicts that have been described as generational, Lykketoft stated bluntly, “No, I do not think the United Nations is up to it”.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has accused the Syrian government of killing the most civilians during the country’s five-year war and said “powerful patrons that keep feeding the war machine also have blood on their hands”.
NEW YORK (AP) – More than four dozen USA businesses have pledged $650 million in support to help some of the world’s refugees, the White House announced Tuesday as President Barack Obama seeks to highlight the refugee plight before world leaders gathered for the annual U.N. General Assembly session. On Tuesday, Mr. Obama said many share the blame.
“Time and again, human beings have believed that they finally arrived at a period of enlightenment only to repeat, then, cycles of conflict and suffering”, Obama said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who also gave his final address to the UN General Assembly, said it was up to the world to show “strong leadership, and in particular, compassion”.
President Obama used his final address to the United Nations General Assembly to make a spirited argument for worldwide cooperation, while also delivering a stern warning about the countervailing forces of nationalism and tribal identity that have been gaining momentum in both the US and Europe. Security in Manhattan, already high in light of the United Nations summit, was further tightened.
Mr Obama, in his final speech to the UN General Assembly, acknowledged that the extremist and sectarian violence wreaking havoc in the Middle East and elsewhere “will not be quickly reversed”.
About 21 million refugees have been forced to flee their countries due to conflict or persecution, the United Nations says.
Stoltenberg added that the coalition members have already agreed on technicalities of planned AWACS operations, the groundwork for which was laid out at NATO’s summit in Warsaw, Poland, in July.
“In a world that left the age of empire behind, we see Russian Federation attempting to recover lost glory through force”, Obama said.
To deal with the current challenges, among which he mentioned nuclear non-proliferation, fighting illnesses like Zika and the refugee crisis, every country must do more, Obama said.
“We must recognize that the same forces of globalization that have pulled us together have also exposed deep fault lines”, Obama said.
Power said the summit wouldn’t be a “panacea” for the crisis, but would show what the US can achieve when it leads on an issue of global concern.
After Brazil’s President Michel Temer finished his address, president of the General Assembly Peter Thomson said Obama is delayed and has not yet arrived for his speech to the General Assembly.
