The company’s national website says it is no longer enrolling students. “We have staff and faculty prepared to advise students on registration, enrollment and course curriculum”, said Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital, Executive VP and Provost of FMU.
Last week, the education department banned the for-profit college from enrolling new students who use federal financial aid. These studens are legally entitled to have their federal student loans forgiven under a closed-school discharge.
“In the past, department officials were literally on Corinthian campuses telling students to enroll in places like ITT Tech”, he said.
The sudden announcement is leaving an estimated 8,000 ITT Tech employees without jobs andand impacting more than 35,000 students who are now enrolled in classes at the institute.
The Department of Eduction in MA told Channel 5 that there were more than 500 MA students enrolled in ITT Tech when the closing hit, and 101 of those students were veterans.
Students go to ITT for an education, but what Matthew Bingham learned Tuesday morning is not what he expected.
ITT Technical Institutes operates 130 campuses in 38 states, including two campuses in San Antonio. The California state government banned all new student admissions at the company’s 15 California schools.
Miller, who says he was just a few months away from graduating with a degree in cybersecurity, said he had a feeling the school would shut down.
“A program that purported to offer computer technology training, that instead was a program where students were basically placed in big box stores to sell computers, rather than actually learn”, Healey explained. The department also ordered ITT to set aside almost $250 million in case the company collapsed.
ITT Tech told by the Department of Education, it was a risk to students and taxpayers and to stop taking new students in need of financial aid.
