Andrew Cashner gets 1st win for Marlins, 6-0 over Phillies

The Miami Marlins ended a five-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. The status of those games – Cardinals-Pirates in Pittsburgh, Mets-Reds in Cincinnati to cite two – was readily available to manager Don Mattingly or any other Marlin who wanted it, should they choose to glance at the brightly colored scoreboard in left-center field. “In the past month and a half, it has probably fallen the wrong way, and it has put us in a bind”.

So, a little less than a third of the time that I’ve been actively rooting for specific baseball teams, I am rewarded with success.

Three runs, three hits, two walks and six strikeouts in five innings for Jake Esch today. He’s hitting well enough that it’s easy to see the Marlins picking up his $2 million option for the 2017 season, when he’ll be 43 years old. The Dominican Republic native yielded a total of four runs in 17 2/3 frames over his last three turns and is trying to lock up a spot in Miami’s 2017 rotation.

The Marlins’ only other run scored during a four-hit rally in the fifth inning, when Adeiny Hechavarria singled to plate J.T. Realmuto. He is day to day.Justin Bour is rumored to be ready to be activated in time for tomorrow’s contest. Galvis’ upper-deck homer made it 2-all, and Peter Bourjos tripled and came home when shortstop Miguel Rojas mishandled a one-out grounder for an error.

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton made a surprise return to the team on Tuesday, working his way back from injuryahead of schedule with a pinch-hit single. In what has become a familiar tale, they would only manage three more hits the rest of the way.

“We want better than that”, Mackanin said of the latter stat. “Consistency and quality at-bats are what we’re looking for”. Mattingly said that if Stanton was to reach base, he would not require a pinch-runner.

Andrew Cashner finally resembled like the pitcher the Miami Marlins hoped he would be when they acquired him in a trade with San Diego. “He’s feeling good. He has been able to swing the bat”. Across 27 starts and a 10-8 record this year, Hellickson has produced a 3.88 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP in 160 innings.
