In need of backup QB, Browns to sign Charlie Whitehurst
“Cody Kessler will be out there playing”, coach Hue Jackson told reporters Monday. Pees, who has migrated from the coaches’ booth to the sideline this season, gathered the defense after a second Josh McCown-to-Corey Coleman touchdown connection gave Cleveland a 20-2 advantage with 4 minutes, 34 seconds left in the opening frame.

Whitehurst worked out for Cleveland on Monday, a day after Josh McCown sustained an injury to his left shoulder in a loss to Baltimore.
Kessler, a third-round pick in the 2016 draft, is set to become the 26th quarterback to start for Cleveland since the 1999 campaign, per Cabot. McCown is expected to regain the starting job when he returns, and is listed as week-to-week with a shoulder injury.
Fox Sports reports that Robert Griffin III will be out at least ten weeks with the possibility of an extended absence up to twelve weeks.
“We’re very hopeful we can get those guys back soon”, Harbaugh said. Pitta also took a couple of big hits, but bounced back each time.
Cleveland plans to sign Charlie Whitehurst, according to his agent (via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network), and he’ll be stepping into an interesting situation. At the same, considering bringing in Whitehurst I am sure will cross the minds of many if deemed appropriate.
“We said something before the game, about what he would want for us”.
“I’ll be ready to go”, Kessler said. On one play, we were in a zone drop, and we bit on a checkdown, and he got behind us.
Jackson was asked if there was any fear of hurting his growth by throwing him in before he’s ready, but Jackson said the Browns really have no choice. “We’ll see what that statement was all about”. “So to me, it’s a good decision to go for it if you get it”.
Kessler, a third-round pick, was the sixth quarterback drafted last spring.
“It’s just not going that way yet, but we just have to stay consistent, and eventually it will turn”.

Rookie Cody Kessler is next on the depth chart, but the Browns could look outside for a veteran QB. McCown said. “I got a dad and older brother who I know get up and go to work and sometimes they don’t feel great, and they go and they grind”.
