The Wellington Chamber of Commerce welcomes the launch of Singapore Airlines” new “Capital Express’ service connecting Wellington, Canberra and Singapore.

It comes after Wellington and Canberra signed a new sister city agreement in July.

Canberra’s demographics are also being changed by its growing tertiary institutions, very strong interest in its tourism potential from China, and in the shorter term, Indonesia, as well as underserved growing demand for outbound worldwide trips from Canberrans and those within a two hour driving radius of its airport.

The flight is part of a “Capital Express” route – Wellington-Canberra-Singapore – which will operate four times a week. The new service has the potential to boost visitor numbers and economic activity throughout the city. During that time a group of 120 travel agents and media were taken on a short “get to know” Wellington excursion taking in attractions like Te Papa, Weta Workshop, the Cable Car, Botanical Gardens, and Zest Food Tours.

The water canon welcome for Singapore Airlines at a sodden Canberra Airport this morning was distinctly superfluous, but this time it has become an global Australian gateway for good.
