More information has been released about the suspect in this weekend’s deadly shooting involving a Carson City Deputy.

Funeral services for Howell are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Reno Events Center, 400 N. Center St.

Furlong said, “while the staff, employees and families of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office have been devastated by this tragedy, law enforcement service levels have remained constant without interruption”.

The Officer Down Memorial Page website reports four total law enforcement deaths in the line of duty in Carson City, the last being Deputy Sheriff Daniel McDaniel in 1963 as a result of an auto accident.

Howell was killed in the line of duty Saturday morning after deputies responded to calls that came in at 2:18 a.m. of a physical domestic disturbance at the 4100 block of Montez Drive.

Deputy Carl Howell was also a Marine which resonated with some of the residents. “He’s the kind of officer that would stand out in front to protect your life regardless of the threats to him”. He protected us and will be in our hearts forever.

Kevin Howell, Carl’s father, said his son loved to ride his motorcycle and had planned a trip with his wife.

“I want him to rest in peace”, Kevin Howell said. The city has also put into motion a crisis response team to help all those involved and provide financial help to the officer’s family.

The streets were lined with flags and people in Carson City to watch the procession of vehicles. Officers who arrived at the scene found a woman who had suffered an injury. While investigating the incident, Howell tried to meet with Pope, who was aware deputies had been called. He then confronted Jonathon Pope, 30, and gunfire was exchanged, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The investigation was relinquished to Reno Police Department with cooperation from the Nevada Division of Investigation, Washoe County Sheriff’s Department Crime Lab and Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
