The results of the leadership battle will be announced this Saturday in Liverpool ahead of the 2016 Labour Party Conference at ACC Liverpool at around 11.45am. It means Scottish Labour is now on track to become fully autonomous within the UK Labour Party.
There has also been rumours and complaints of threats of de-selection of MPs who oppose Mr Corbyn.
This is the joint statement issued by Tom Watson, deputy leader, and Yvette Cooper, chair of the Reclaim the Internet campaign, after Labour’s ruling NEC agreed a tougher for all members on tackling abuse.
‘We have a problem, we need to be clearer about our values and about the standards acceptable in the Labour Party – and this is an important step in doing so.
She added: “We’re obviously picking up all the commentary. everywhere we can see the commentary and the expectation that is Jeremy is going to win”.
Under the current rules, the party leader has the responsibility for appointing shadow cabinet members.
“It felt like it was a turning point for the whole party and I’m very confident now that we can reunite”.
Meanwhile, Mr Smith has made a final push to woo undecided party members. I should be the MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, a hard-working, life-long member of the Labour Party.
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell, a close ally of Mr Corbyn, has expressed confidence the incumbent leader will be re-elected.
In a message to Labour members, Mr Smith said: ‘This has been a long and bruising contest, and I know many of you didn’t want it to happen. But the truth is it had to happen’.
“Our party is at a crossroads, and the choice we face is between renewing our party to pursue unity and power, or satisfying ourselves with ongoing division and opposition”, said Smith, who was far behind Corbyn in a YouGov poll published last month.
