Officials reach agreement over New York bus terminal
Plans for a new bus terminal on Manhattan’s West Side have inched forward after a group of elected officials in New York City agreed in a joint statement that the $10 billion replacement depot was needed.

Until then, Weinberg said, the New Yorkers were concerned that a new terminal would involve the Port Authority making use of eminent domain power to seize large chunks of valuable West Side commercial space.
“We always realized that a new terminal had to be built and part of it had to be on the West Side”, he told the Daily News, adding that Manhattan officials had not committed to building the entire terminal in the area.
“The future planning for the project. will fully examine the range of options for a new Bus Terminal and view the project in an appropriate regional context.” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who was also part of the rally against the Port Authority’s original plan, in a statement.
More than 230,000 passengers pass through the terminal each weekday, and that number is expected to swell to more than 330,000 by 2040, according to Port Authority projections.
Port Authority had trimmed the design competition down to five finalists in August and planned to choose the victor from those five in September.
Now, the five designs from that competition will be analyzed as part of the broader planning process. “We need to see a design that provides comfortable platforms”.
The designs that were shown to the two state contingents will be made available to the public on Thursday, a spokesman for the Port Authority said.
State politicians weren’t happy with the Port Authority’s new bus terminal process, but everyone involved seems to have come to a compromise Tuesday.
