United Kingdom forces ‘took part in air strike which killed Syrian government troops’

The already fragile truce was jeopardised by attacks over the weekend, with barrel bomb attacks reported in the besieged city of Aleppo and an errant United States coalition air strike that killed more than 60 Syrian troops in Deir Ezzor. A humanitarian convoy last reached the town in July, the ICRC said.

There was an uptick in violence Friday, when the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that four civilians were killed in airstrikes in Idlib, without identifying who carried them out.

Barrel bombs are commonly used by the regime, while rebel and militant groups are not known to have the capacity for air power.

Russian planes have supported the regime’s air force in hitting hospitals and refugee camps, she said, before going on to accuse the regime of “bombing in defiance of the cessation of hostilities”.

On Monday, Kerry called the convoy attack an “egregious violation” of the cease-fire and said the U.S.

The United States and Russian Federation are on opposite sides of the 5-1/2-year-old war in which hundreds of thousands of people have been killed.

United Nations officials said the United Nations and Red Crescent convoy was delivering assistance for 78,000 people in the town of Uram al-Kubra, west of the northern city of Aleppo. Rebels reportedly hold the area.

“But there is an investigation taking place and we will be contributing to that investigation fully”.

The US administration officials wouldn’t address the question of whether the strike on the United Nations aid convoy might have been in revenge for the deaths of the 62 Syrian soldiers killed Saturday.

What was in the aid convoy?

Humanitarian aid would reach desperate civilians, particularly in devastated eastern Aleppo.

Rudskoy said that the rebels had not withdrawn their military hardware from the area, preventing Syrian troops from doing the same.

He said it’s “a very, very dark day. for humanitarians across the world”.

Washington has blamed Russian Federation for not pressuring Damascus enough to facilitate humanitarian access to Syria.

The ICRC says it also delivered materials to fix the town’s water network as well as hygiene products. The convoy was also carrying winter clothes and blankets.

What happens to the ceasefire?

Monday night’s attack came just hours after Syrian authorities declared an end to a fragile ceasefire in the war-torn country.

The U.N. aid coordinator said the Syria government had granted needed authorizations in recent days to allow for aid convoys to proceed inside Syria.

Kirby noted that the cease-fire arrangement was agreed to by the United States and Russian Federation, which is responsible for the compliance of the Assad government.

It accused “terrorist groups”, a term the government uses for all insurgents, of exploiting the calm to rearm while violating the ceasefire 300 times and vowed to “continue fulfilling its national duties in fighting terrorism in order to bring back security and stability”.

“We are trying to get more information”.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says he “regrets the loss of life” after his fighter jets were involved in a botched airstrike that shattered hopes for a ceasefire in Syria.

“Unfortunately, we can state. that our American colleagues have failed to separate terrorists from the so-called moderate opposition”.

Fierce clashes were heard throughout Damascus on Monday as Syria’s military launched its attack against rebel forces, according to the AFP news agency.

In the five-and-a-half years since Assad’s regime cracked down on a March 2011 anti-government demonstration, an estimated 430,000 people have been killed.

“Powerful patrons that keep feeding the war machine also have blood on their hands”. There were no independent reports of civilian deaths on the government side since the cease-fire came into effect.

“Just when we think it can not get any worse, the power of depravity sinks lower”.

The convoy, part of a routine interagency dispatch operated by the Syrian Red Crescent, was hit in rural western Aleppo province. The attack prompted the United Nations to halt its aid operations in Syria.
