Twenty-seven Great Neck Public School students were named semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of US high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. “We are ecstatic with the success of our students”. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will be awarded a National Merit Scholarship. Their recognition as Semifinalists reflects a great deal of hard work and a sustained commitment to excellence.

Abel Banko, Victor Baumann, Stella Hurtt, Shilpa Ray and Christine Zhang will join the national competition for 7,500 awards, totaling more than $33 million.
“All of our Edmond National Merit semifinalists, regardless of their outside interests or in-school achievements, are wonderful examples of the power of the combined influences of engaged families, richly blessed communities, purposeful schools and teachers and willing, tenacious teens”.
National Merit Finalists will be chosen in February and scholarship awards will be announced between April and July.
Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2017.
About 1.6 million students entered the competition. Principal Marshall Gasperson is the 2016-17 Watauga County Schools Principal of the Year.

Edmond’s semifinalists include two from Edmond Santa Fe High School; eight from Edmond Memorial High School and 17 from Edmond North High School. Students at the high school also outperformed their statewide peers on most of the state’s required assessments, including End-of-Course tests in English and Biology, the ACT, and the WorkKeys test.
