PATRIOTS NOTEBOOK: Gostkowski gave Pats a leg up on Cardinals

Jimmy Garoppolo made his first National Football League start in place of Brady, who sat out Game 1 of his four-game Deflategate ban Sunday night – and the third-year QB led the Patriots to a 23-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Catanzaro took responsibility for the miss. I mean that’s something that all quarterbacks do and it’s just the sense that you learn from playing that position.

Okay, probably not. But, if you can believe it, said parody happened.

“It was a little low”, he said.

“We should have won the game”. It seems like every single player on the roster is good enough to perform their assigned role, whether they are a pro bowler or a third stringer.

“A lot of times you don’t know how well you did until you watch the film after the game. the athleticism of all the players, and how hard the hits are, and how quickly the decisions are made, it’s just so much fun to watch”, Brady added.

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said after the game that his team needs to get back to the basics and come better prepared to the next game. “It was great to see the Patriots finish off the night with a huge win in Arizona”. “Any time you lose the opener at home it hurts, but there’s too much football ahead of us, too many guys that love the game, have passion for the game, want to get it right and want to bounce back with a big win at home next week and we’ll continue to work to be able to do that”.

AGELESS FITZGERALD: Larry Fitzgerald caught both of Arizona’s touchdown passes, the second a marvelous, over-the-shoulder, sliding grab to put the Cardinals up in the fourth quarter.

Ex-Patriot Chandler Jones sacked Garoppolo on the first play of New England’s next possession, but the young quarterback still set up the winning kick by Gostkowski, who also booted a 53-yarder.

With the win, the New England Patriots are now 2-1 at the University of Phoenix Stadium, with that one loss coming in the 17-14 heartbreaker that was Super Bowl XLII. “Like I said, it’s a tough place to play against a good defense”. He noted that when the Cardinals’ roster doesn’t play to its level, “then we’re going to have disappointment, and that’s certainly what happened last night”. He made a couple of big plays, including a touchdown, but only averaged 3.2 yards per carry. Rookie cornerback Brandon Williams was beaten badly for the second time on Garoppolo’s 28-yard pass to the Arizona 8.

“I don’t talk about the future”, he said.

Stephen Gostkowski put the missed extra point in last year’s AFC Championship game behind him, returning to his unshakable self in a game in which he nailed three field goals including the eventual game victor from 23 yards. Well, some will credit backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo for ably filling in for the Deflator, going 24 for 33 with 264 yards and a touchdown. Julian Edelman had seven catches for 66 yards, Chris Hogan had three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

He had five throws that went for 10 yards or more on third down, and also scrambled for 10 yards on another.
