Following his knee surgery, the German worldwide made his debut for City against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League last week and scored his first goal for the club against Bournemouth on the weekend.

According to Ilkay Gundogan, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp advised him to move to the English Premier League in a telephonic chat in the off-season.

‘To be honest I asked [Klopp’s] advice, if the Premier League was the right thing for me, ‘ Gundogan told German publication Sport Bild.

Klopp left the Bundesliga side last season to join Liverpool and Gundogan has now followed him to the Premier League but the pair won’t come up against each other until December 31.

‘It was good to have my impressions confirmed’.

City supporters will feel in some way indebted to Liverpool boss Klopp for the role he played in ensuring Gundogan made his way to the Premier League, thankful it was the Etihad Stadium that was his destination.

Ilkay Gundogan scored his first Manchester City goal against Bournemouth at the weekend.

The Germany worldwide, 25, completed a switch to City from Dortmund in June, agreeing terms on a four-year contract. “I was the first he wanted to bring here and I was still injured at the time so that says something”.

Klopp’s advice was not the only reason for Gundogan to pick Manchester City, though, with the presence of the club’s new head coach Pep Guardiola another key factor.
