Police say Scott-who was not the man they were looking for-was approached by officers after he got back in the vehicle and was shot dead when he emerged from the auto with a gun again. The police report said Scott then re-emerged from his vehicle “armed with a firearm and posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers”.

The man, later identified as Scott, was pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center.

The protest appeared to be dispersing late Tuesday after police fired tear gas, but not before an emergency unit was dispatched to safely remove officers, authorities said.

Local television channels showed people carrying signs saying “Black Lives Matter” and chanting “No justice, no peace!”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) said on its twitter account that “agitators” destroyed marked police cars during the demonstration. One officer was reportedly struck in the face with a rock.

In Charlotte, Mr. Scott was killed after officers arrived at his apartment complex to serve another suspect with an outstanding warrant.

TV footage early Wednesday showed dozens of protesters on the highway facing a line of law enforcement officers.

Video from WCCB-TV in Charlotte showed police in riot gear stretched across a two-lane road confronting protesters at the apartment complex later in the night.

“The community deserves answers and full investigation will ensue”, she tweeted.

Other family members at the scene told Becker that Scott was “reading a book and did not have a weapon”.

On Facebook, a woman who identified herself as Scott’s daughter said that the police had fired without provocation.

Detectives recovered the firearm the man had been holding at the time of the shooting at the scene.

Twelve police officers have been injured in clashes between protesters and police, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The shooting of Scott comes just a day after police in Tulsa released video of an officer shooting and killing an unarmed black man who had gotten out of a stalled SUV.

“Demonstrators surrounded our officers who were attempting to leave scene”, the department said.

Shakeala Baker, a neighbor, told Reuters that she had seen Scott waiting for his child in the parking lot of his apartment complex on previous afternoons. WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, reported that about 15 officers and one protester were hurt.

Video footage showed demonstrators kicking out the windows of a police squad auto and social media posts reported several vehicles were damaged during the protest.
