With its approximately $22 million second weekend totals, the Clint Eastwood directed Sully sees its domestic totals rise to $70.5 million.

The film, which courted controversy with its take on the jet’s landing in the Hudson River in 2009, collected an estimated $22 million in USA and Canadian theaters, ComScore Inc. said Sunday in a statement.
A trio of newcomers failed to fly close to the haul earned by “Sully”. The Renee Zellweger-led comedy debuts in the third place with an estimated $8.2 million, while the Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley-starring film opens at No. 4 with approximately $8 million in its first week.
“This is what we typically see in September”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with ComScore.
Snowden, director Oliver Stone’s film about Edward Snowden, the United States intelligence contractor who leaked thousands of classified documents to journalists, opened in fourth place at US$8.02 million Suspense thriller Don’t Breathe slipped from third to fifth place, taking in US$5.60 million.
The only of the weekend’s four wide releases to open right along with expectations (although those expectations weren’t high) was Oliver Stone’s ‘Snowden’. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. Overall, the weekend’s top twelve was down 11.6% compared to last week and down 24.3% compared to last year with the top twelve generating an estimated $74.6 million, just $136k shy of the worst weekend of the year so far. The $40 million whistle-blowing drama snuck away with $8.2 million and a #4 rank in the Top 10.
Stalker thriller When the Bough Breaks came in at #6, taking a largely-expected heavy fall of 61% to bring in $5.5 million.
American audiences weren’t so curious about the mystery father of Bridget Jones’s Baby after all. In second position, Blair Witch made a nice entry by collecting $ 9.6 million in revenue for a budget of $ 5 million.

Suicide Squad continues to show resilience as it trucks along toward the end of its run, down just 18% to $4.7 million for a #7 ranking. This means that between its first and second weekends, the film has been able to do almost $100 million in ticket sales globally. The film is cruising its way toward at least $90 million domestically and needless to say, it’s a huge hit with a budget of just $9.9 million. The film is expected to hit around $21 million when the final numbers come in. The Ron Howard film collected $615,632 – the best per-screen average ($7,243) out of any film playing in theaters this weekend.
