New Orleans Saints Cut Ties With CJ Spiller

Here’s how they can upset the Giants.

Notes: Payton said Tuesday’s release of running back C.J. Spiller was accelerated by the need to sign another cornerback on the heels of Breaux’s injury. Because while that Saints game isn’t the reason the Giants chose to spend $200 million overhauling their defense in the offseason, that game is still exactly the type of disaster that spending spree is supposed to prevent. How do the Saints accomplish this? Mack had 15 sacks last season, second-most in the National Football League behind Houston’s J.J. Watt. In all seriousness, Brees is just a smart quarterback and in Sean Payton’s offense, which incorporates a lot of quick, short and intermediate passes, what he mostly needs is his brain and a decent-to- good offensive line.

Mark Ingram is going to have to be a key component to the offense this week in order to win the time of possession category. The losing team in those four games has averaged over 31 points per game. Last year Manning had one of the greatest games any Giants quarterback has ever enjoyed. Drew Brees and the visiting Saints look for more of the same on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium as they attempt to rebound from a season-opening loss.Brees threw for 505 yards and seven touchdowns in a 52-49 track meet-style victory over the Giants on November 1 and followed in those footsteps with 423 yards passing and four scores in a 35-34 setback to Oakland on Sunday.

This week, the defense will have to be more opportunistic in the turnover department.

Alex: Eli Manning didn’t look in sync. Spiller’s run in New Orleans was extremely disappointing.

Jean-Rene: The loss of Delvin Breaux is huge for the Saints’ defense.

Just don’t be awful. It would also get a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2011 a little confidence, something that might carry over into the rest of the year.

The expectation is that Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is going to take a big step forward this season. It came down to a last-second field goal and, like most Giants games in 2015, a series of last-minute gaffes. The two teams totaled for over 1,000 yards and 100 total points.

Yes, Lutz’ boot slid wide left at the end.

Don’t expect this one to be close Saints fans. What changed after being the NFL’s worst in 2015?

It was a good first start, but chances are they won’t get any breaks like that against Brees, and he will tear them apart if the pass rush is nonexistent. The Giants plan on scoring plenty of points this weekend. This one could be over midway through the second quarter.
