Although Dustin Johnson’s change to a TaylorMade Black Limited Edition Itsy Bitsy Spider putter was a topic everyone wanted to talk about during the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick G.C., Johnson himself didn’t get caught up in the hype.
Johnson has left his mark on this season in the exact way nearly every Player of the Year victor has – a major victor (for the first time), WGC victor and FedEx Cup Playoff victor in the third event of the playoffs.
Casey settled for second place for the second week in a row on 268, his seventh runner-up finish on the US PGA Tour, after a 67 with American Roberto Castro third on 271.
Johnson poured in a long putt for eagle on top of Casey to extend the lead back to three strokes and cruised home to the trophy and (more than likely) that Player of the Year award, which will be handed out after the Tour Championship in two weeks.
Adam Scott during the final round of the BMW Championship.
“I ran into a buzz saw with Dustin Johnson the last two days”, he said.
Johnson is ranked No. 1 going into the Tour Championship and controls his own destiny when it comes to the FedEx Cup.
The top 30 players in points after this week advance to the Tour Championship and the five points leaders can win the bonus by simply winning the tournament.
He finished at 23-under 265 and went over $9 million in earnings for the year, along with taking the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup to the finale in two weeks at East Lake for the Tour Championship. “It would have been nice to play better to make the pick a lot easier on him. I’m going to go out there and play good golf and see what happens”.
USA Ryder Cup hopefuls Matt Kuchar and J.B. Holmes also finished at 12 under with Charl Schwartzel and Ryan Palmer. “You don’t always have your best game, and I was able to finish it off and get in the Tour Championship”.
World No1 Jason Day withdrew from the BMW Championship due to back pain after hitting his ninth-hole tee shot.
Best of the rest: It wasn’t the lowest score, but Castro’s 5-under 67 made the biggest difference since it clinched his spot at the Tour Championship.
