Gators prepare for Tennessee with Austin Appleby at quarterback

Florida has yet to be tested, but they did lose their starting quarterback for a while last night while playing North Texas.

Del Rio was injured in the third quarter of Florida’s 32-0 win over North Texas when a Mean Green defender hit the quarterback low on his left knee. His status is uncertain for Saturday’s SEC showdown in Knoxville. It looks like they could be without him going into this weekend’s game against the Tennessee Volunteers.

“Luke is getting his leg looked at right now”.

For McElwain, who is entering his second year as UF’s head coach and 30th year in the coaching industry overall, he strives to make relationships with his players personal. “We’ll do whatever. Somebody else will play”. We’ll show up, we’ll be there. Florida’s other options at quarterback include Kyle Trask and Feleipe Franks.

“We’ll work through that this week to see what gives us the best chance to be successful”. That’s how much I care about our players. When you see something like that, it’s my responsibility when their parents aren’t here to be their parents.

Hinton completed 11 of 19 passes for 174 yards and one interception in three games for the Demon Deacons’ run-based offense. The old record of 59 came against Western Carolina in 2006.

More valuable for the fifth-year senior: His defense leads the nation in points (4.7), yards (129.7) and sacks (16).

University of North Texas defensive lineman Joshua Wheeler delivered the hit. “My momma always told me if you play with fire, you get burnt.”?

“Because of what we’re doing and what we need to do in preparation, I know you guys have had a long, already kind of long season“, McElwain said to reporters Monday. It seems like it’s been a while since these two teams were both ranked when they were matched up, and so much was on the line.

“We’ve got to put points on the board when we’re down there in the red area”, McElwain said. Sophomore quarterback Luke Del Rio finished 14-for-25 with 197 yards and an interception. With Del Rio out and Callaway either limited or inactive, there may well be production holes to fill.

“We’ll take him on the trip for part of that reason”. “We tried to make plays”. So that rotation in the O-line will stay about the same as we did last week, but I thought those guys battled their tail off and took some pride in it.

Cheap or not, the hit could have a big impact on Del Rio – and Florida’s season.

“The defense comes with it every day in practice”, UNT wide receiver Thaddeous Thompson said. “You don’t ever want to be somebody’s caddie”, Appleby said. You want to be the guy that’s got the ball in his hands.
