The Uri incident was one of the deadliest attacks on Indian Army in recent years, as heavily-armed terrorists stormed a battalion headquarters of the force. The U.S maintains that India and Pakistan must resolve issues bilaterally.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, in an official statement quoting Foreign Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura, said, “The Government of Japan strongly condemns the terrorist attack on the Indian Base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, and extends its honest condolences to those who lost their lives and their bereaved families, and expresses its heartfelt sympathy to those who were injured”.
Nawaz Sharif spoke to army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif on telephone on Tuesday night regarding the tensions with India in the wake of the Sunday terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Dawn reported. He referred to slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, killed in an encounter with security forces on 8 July, as a “young leader” and said he has “emerged as the symbol of the latest Kashmiri Intifada, a popular and peaceful freedom movement”. India was quick to lay the blame on Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, who was also at the conference, said that no other state had acted against terrorism as much as Pakistan had. Most people in the Indian-controlled portion favor independence or a merger with Pakistan.
Meanwhile, some residents of border villages in the Pakistan-controlled portion of Kashmir said they were frightened after the Indian army hoisted red flags along the Line of Control, a sign of danger and increased tension.
Indian officials declined to comment on the flags. “They were intercepted and the infiltration bid was foiled”, he told AFP. Islamabad denies the charge, saying it only gives political and diplomatic support to the rebels.
Pakistani officials say Indians want to distract the world from the situation in held Kashmir by indulging in such tactics.
The protests, and a sweeping military crackdown, have all but paralyzed life in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
