Disney and Lucasfilms promise new Star Wars movies through 2021

Iger was then pressed about the future of the Star Wars franchise, to which he confirmed that the House of Mouse has already begun drafting up plans for 2020 and beyond – surprise! But Disney clearly sees both Rogue One and its upcoming Han Solo spin-off – each of which are being branded as “A Star Wars Story” – as key to moving forward with the franchise. “Star Wars” has only been told as a saga, and this is a moment in time … we love what we’ve seen”. Iger went on to tease that a similar meeting has been had with Marvel Studios as well. But with the film undergoing extensive reshoots this summer – and filmmaker Tony Gilroy reportedly stepping in to lend a hand – many have taken the changes as a sign that Disney was unhappy with the dour tone, and hoped to lighten the film up a bit. Disney has downplayed these reports publicly, and the Rogue One trailers don’t seem to be hitting the same chords with potential audiences no matter what Iger claims.

The organizers of the event have indeed written, “Following the production of Star Wars, Carrie Fisher will be present at Comic Con in NY on Sunday afternoon”. Speaking at Goldman Sachs Communacopia (via TheWrap), Iger said Disney’s Star Wars plans extend past their previously announced 2020 films, and into “2021 and beyond”. As the modern film series continues to development many fans are excited to see the expansion of the Star Wars universe and the elevation of themes of diversity within the series.
