At a cabinet meeting held in Karnataka today it was decided that water shall not be released until a special session of the legislative assembly is convened on Saturday.
Water management boards could be an ideal option for resolving water disputes between the States, such as that between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on the Cauvery waters, Central Water Commission (CWC) Chairman G S Jha has said.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had termed the Supreme Court’s order as “unimplementable” on Tuesday.
The former Chief Minister also advised the party’s opposition leaders Jagdish Shettar (assembly) and K.E. Eshwarappa (council), Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and D.V. Arson and loss of life followed the Supreme Court’s two orders September 5 and 12 on the release of waters from Karnataka, the upper riparian State.
Karnataka, facing its second consecutive drought year, has repeatedly appealed before the apex court to reconsider its direction to share the Cauvery waters with its neighbour, citing an acute shortage of drinking water.
A bench of justices Dipak Misra and U U Lalit had also asked the Centre to constitute within four weeks, the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) as directed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) in its award.
“In this background, the Cabinet has made a decision to request his Excellency the Governor to call a session of both the houses of the legislature on 23-09-2016 at 11 am”.
