Newton: There needs to be accountability in police shooting
So it was ridiculous previous year when Newton said nobody had ever seen the likes of himself as a black quarterback, with the ability to destroy opponents through the air and on the ground. And we all have to what’s right no matter the race, age or gender! After being open on some racial issues in the past, he has become more reserved and guarded most recently. Maybe, as the GQ piece speculated, Newton is sick of “explaining away the cruel and insinuating things that other people say about him”.

On Wednesday, he did, however, offer his candid thoughts about what was happening in his community – a shooting death that has grabbed the national spotlight.
“I think there’s some hostility and friction between these two guys based on the picture and Kaepernick’s Twitter feed”, Whitlock said. “I’m an African-American. I am not happy with how justice has been dealt with over the years”. We can’t be hypocrites. Just like many other professional athletes, millions of people know who he is, and millions of people take note when he says something.
Except, consider this: if Newton is going to get inserted into the middle of this, he’d damn well better not be alone. “I’m a firm believer of doing the right thing”, Newton said. Like I have a son and a daughter that I’m responsible for.
It couldn’t have gone much better for Arizona defence as they helped themselves to three sacks, four interceptions, one fumble recovery and a 60-yard defensive touchdown for cornerback Marcus Cooper to rout the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 40-7. On the one hand, seeing the long list of victims of police killings “is embarrassing, ” he said, as is the way that officers “take a leave of absence and still get paid”. “So who am I to sit up here and make a specific judgment?”
Rivera said he has “concerns” about Stewart moving forward, but that second-year back Cameron Artis-Payne is ready for action. Newton didn’t find the end zone with his legs Sunday against the 49ers, who still stand beside the Rams as the lone NFC teams to not be victimized by a Newton touchdown run. It’s kind of like, hey, in my sport, in my life, if I’m not held accountable, there’s (backup quarterback) Derek Anderson, there’s Joe Webb. I’m an African American that’s black and proud to the day I die and I try to make an impact in my community as much as I can.
“The elected people need to learn to reach across and work together and get some things corrected and fixed very quickly”.
“I am saying we have to have a clear eye vision on both sides and starts with everyone holding each other accountable and policing yourselves”.
“I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not”, Newton told the magazine.

After saying he salutes Kaepernick “for making a stand for injustice in this country”, Newton wrote, “the real problem is and will always be the people and how we treat one another”.
