Siddaramaiah said that they have made a decision to defer releasing water to Tamil Nadu.
The opposition BJP said it had chose to boycott the all-party meeting Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has convened on Wednesday evening to discuss the Supreme Court verdict on the release of more Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu.
Siddaramaiah said Karnataka had placed certain facts before the Cauvery Supervisory Committee, but it still directed the state on Monday to release 3,000 cusecs per day between September 21 and 30.
Leaders also suggested that after passing the resolution not to release water in the legislature, this should be conveyed to the Supreme Court, which will hear the case again on September 27.
Karnataka, facing its second consecutive drought year, has repeatedly appealed before the apex court to reconsider its direction to share the Cauvery waters with its neighbour, citing an acute shortage of drinking water. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Gowda said he urged the Chief Minister not to release a drop of water to Tamil Nadu.
The all-party meeting was attended by Deve Gowda, former Union ministers Veerappa Moily and Mallikarjun Kharge, JD (S) leader Kumaraswamy and other senior leaders of various political parties.
A bench of justices Dipak Misra and U U Lalit had also asked the Centre to constitute within four weeks, the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) as directed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) in its award.
“Immediately Assembly session should be called where the issue should be discussed in detail, the decision taken there should be informed to the Supreme Court”, BS Yeddyurappa has said.
