Another big cable company says it wants to do cellphones too

The upcoming Comcast mobile services were unveiled by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference in NY, according to a September 20 article by Bloomberg. At the time, Roberts told Business Insider that Comcast had dabbled with wireless phone service before, but it wasn’t a huge success.

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts revealed the plan at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference. Now, though, the company is preparing to expand its product portfolio further, by launching a new wireless service.

The plans at Comcast and Charter involve a hybrid cellular and Wi-Fi service using Verizon’s network and millions of cable Wi-Fi hotspots in peoples’ homes. Also, Comcast has 15 million Wi-Fi hotspots. But for those areas where WiFi will not be available, the service will switch to the Verizon Network.

Just like other providers, Comcast’s service will let customers make phone calls and browse the Web from their smartphones.

“If you are one of our better customers, we believe there will be a big payback with reduced churn, with more stickiness, with better satisfaction, more product purchasing from us”, Roberts explained.

As the cable-TV business remains stagnant, moving into the wireless service space can help Comcast gain an edge with a new revenue stream, but the company is entering a crowded marketplace with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint controlling large shares. Roberts added that Comcast would probably offer the cellular service as another product in its cable bundle, just as consumers can now buy phone, TV and Internet access as a package. Robert said that the said that the company is interested in up-selling customers to a bigger bundle of services.
