Rochester’s mother, Kimberly Rochester, was taken to the Cherokee County jail Tuesday night and charged with violating the terms of her probation.
No one was injured, said Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller.
Authorities believed they were close to catching Rochester Wednesday morning when a man resembling him was spotted along Interstate 40 in Asheville.
Police say the carjacking happened around 7:15 a.m.
The carjacking victim was punched several times in the chest and taken to Mary Black Hospital and later released, Spartanburg police said.
Rochester has tattoos on his neck, forearm, right leg and praying hands on his upper arm, the SCDOC says. He was serving a sentence for breaking into motor vehicles.
He is now being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center, and will be transferred back to SCDOC.
