Microphones and cameras didn’t surround the lockers of Adam Jones or Manny Machado on Tuesday, Sept. 20 before the Baltimore Orioles’ matchup against the Boston Red Sox, their American League East Division rival. The 5-2 victory last night against the Orioles has the same Bostonians feeling like the team used their wands to send those clouds away, leaving only a magical number in its place: eight games to win the division. He was charged with two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Oh, and there was a side of Bumgarner-Puig macho posturing, which seemed to be started by Bumgarner. The rookie had won at Boston on September 13 in his previous start.

I wrote this up in its own post when I woke up this morning because the world needed a longer treatment of a game that stands as a microcosm for the Giants season.

– Marco Estrada led the Blue Jays to a 3-2 win against the Mariners after taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

He’s followed by Houston’s Jose Altuve (9-to-4), Boston’s Mookie Betts (4-to-1), Angels’ Mike Trout (4-to-1) and Toronto’s Josh Donaldson (6-to-1).

It was the 31st homer of the year for Betts, who reached base for the 32nd consecutive road game.

That all but assured the Red Sox their 12th win in 15 games. He homered for his first Major League Baseball hit and, to top it off, his mother got to keep the ball as a momento of her son’s feat.

That’s a lot of words for just one at-bat, but it was a huge at-bat and the Orioles came up short, as their pitchers often seem to come up short despite having pitcher’s counts.

Melky Cabrera hit a three-run home run for the White Sox, who have lost four straight. Pedroia had an RBI single, and Ortiz smacked a two-run homer off Bundy.

David Ortiz also dominated the Orioles’ pitching staff.

Padres 3, Diamondbacks 2: San Diego scored all three of their runs in the fourth thanks to a Wil Myers homer and an Alexi Amarista two-run single.

On Sunday night in Boston, Hanley Ramirez slugged two home runs, including the go-ahead solo shot in the seventh inning, and had four RBIs to help the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 5-4.

McCutchen’s two-run double in the first staked rookie left-hander Steven Brault to an early lead.

Luis Severino (3-8) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Lester (18-4) allowed one run on six hits while striking out five and walking none in a seven-inning outing.

Pomeranz is 0-3 in five starts since his last win August 20 at Detroit.

On Tuesday, Camden Yards drew a crowd of 20,387 for the second game of a four-game set with first-place Boston, putting the Orioles – who made the playoffs in 2012 and 2014 – over the 2 million mark in attendance for the fifth straight season.
