Oklahoma St. moves on from controversy, addresses run game

The officials admitted their mistake soon after the game. The play that followed was even more astonishing. “The final score shows that Oklahoma State lost the game but that doesn’t mean that I have to agree with it”.

But that was a Big 12 replay crew upstairs in Stillwater, one that failed to correct the gaffe on the field, one that -like the MAC minor-leaguers – received a suspension. There are three more this weekend: No. 14 Oklahoma hosts No. 3 Ohio State, Oklahoma State is home against Pittsburgh and No. 11 Texas goes to California.

CMU head coach John Bonamego describes his feelings after the Chips upset No. 22 Oklahoma State on a Hail Mary lateral on the game’s final play to win.

This play came after Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph was called for intentional grounding on fourth down while the Cowboys were trying to run out the clock to end the game.

You can actually see why the MAC officials in the Central Michigan-Oklahoma State game erred – even if they should’ve known better.

According to Rule 3-2-3 – which covers timing- in the college football rule book: “The period is not extended if the foul is by the team in possession and the statement of the penalty includes loss of down”. But there is an exception that the game can end when the penalty involves a loss of down, such as intentional grounding. He also mentioned that in OU’s game with Louisiana Monroe Saturday the officials took about five minutes with a replay review to determine a first down.

But the final result stood.

Unfortunately, the rules state that only the referee can declare the game over – not the clock or a league office after the fact. “I have personally informed the crew of our decision”, Carollo said in a Mid-American Conference press release.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is still answering questions about the controversial finish in Saturday’s 30-27 loss to Central Michigan on a miracle play that shouldn’t have happened.

“We had conversations with everyone that could help us understand the situation and do something about the outcome”.

“I think that we have Big 12 officials in Dallas watching the games with a buzzer to the people here”.

On Sunday, Gundy took some responsibility for the way the Cowboys tried to kill the final 4 seconds by having Rudolph throw the ball away on a fourth down, instead of taking the snap, running backward and going down. But it backfired after the officials conferred.

I’m disappointed in myself that I called a play that could have been interpreted as intentional grounding.

“That’s a tough one.

Just so everyone knows, I was the one who called the passing play”, said OSU coach Mike Gundy.

“When I’m involved in a game like that, that’s something that will come across my mind 500 times if I live long enough”, he said. As Kroll was being tackled at the 9, he made a desperation lateral to Corey Willis, who cut across field and leaned into the end with a defender draped around his neck.

“I feel like collectively, as a defense, we let down”, Sterns said. After blowing a 20-7 third-quarter lead, the Hogs scored a touchdown late and added a two-point conversion to send the game into OT.

Rush completed 30-of-42 passes for 361 yards and four TDs, including a pair of TD tosses to tight end Tyler Conklin.

Mike Gundy is ready to move on from non Big 12 officials calling his home games and allowing this to happen. USATSI
