Clinton, Trump decry latest police shootings of black men

Yesterday afternoon, after the tragic shooting in Tulsa and as the shooting in Charlotte was playing out, Hillary Clinton made a comment on the Steve Harvey show that if black voters would come out for her she would be able to “speak directly to white people” about the need to improve policing.

Trump’s latest foray into the black community not only sought to connect with voters in Cleveland, home to a large community of African-American voters key to Clinton’s prospects in OH, but also with moderate suburban voters, who frequently hear Clinton describe Trump as extreme.

JOHN YANG: In a town hall airing tonight on FOX News, Trump said he wants to see more use of stop and frisk, a practice a federal judge has called unconstitutional. “I don’t know anybody who does”, Clinton said.

Issues of race and justice were also the candidates’ focus on the campaign trail today.

Trump would secure wins in several battleground states, according to the forecast, including Florida, Ohio and North Carolina.

Hours earlier, Clinton’s Republican opponent, Donald Trump, said he was “very troubled” by the Tulsa case, adding that he believes that police officers who overreact under pressure should not be entrusted with the responsibility. “And he looked like a really good man”.

But later at a rally in Toledo, Trump focused on the economy and immigration, without mentioning the shootings or law enforcement. “I mean, this is just unbearable and it needs to be intolerable”. “I’ve spoken to many police chiefs and other law enforcement leaders who are as deeply concerned as I am, and deeply committed, as I am, to reform. Why?” The group includes the mothers of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, black victims of high-profile killings.

“The city’s mayor, Jennifer Roberts, promised a swift investigation into the actions of officer Brentley Vinson, who joined the police department in 2014”.
