68th Primetime Emmy Awards Recap

Yet you’d hardly know those networks exist from watching Sunday’s awards.

The Emmys once again hit a new low in viewership Sunday night, with 11.3 million people tuning in to the ceremony on ABC, according to Nielsen.

Considering that she was up against Lena Headey, Maisie Williams and Emilia Clarke, Smith had better watch her back – the last season of “Game of Thrones” would suggest that they’re not the most forgiving group. Other notable wins included “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” (2014-present) for Outstanding Variety Series, Kate McKinnon of “Saturday Night Live” (1975 – present) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Sterling K. Brown of “The People v. O.J.” for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.

Veep won the Outstanding Comedy Series award for the second year in a row, while its star Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Outstanding Lead Comedy Actress for the fifth time, thus making Emmy record.

That gives it a total haul over the years of 38 – more than any other narrative series since the first Television Academy prize-giving in 1949, overtaking the haul of 37 won by long-running comedy Frasier.

This time, Smith won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Downton Abbey, and Kimmel joked that Smith didn’t deserve it.

The show earned 69 Emmy nominations in 15 categories over the past six seasons including Drama Series, Writing for a Drama Series and Casting for a Drama Series.

Television’s biggest stars took over Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Sunday, September 18th for the 68th annual Emmy Awards, with Jimmy Kimmel returning to the stage for his second stint as host for the live show. Right in the garbage.

“If Donald Trump gets elected and he builds that wall, the first person we are throwing over it is Mark Burnett”, Kimmel said, setting the political tone of the show 50 days before America elects its next president.

That of course isn’t to say that Maggie Smith didn’t deserve the award.

‘When Maggie Smith finds out she’s been awarded with an Emmy she has the same reaction we get when we get Bed Bath And Beyond coupons in the mail. But reply she did.

“I am so glad that he liked Veep”, she said, her voice breaking down as she accepted the award. On Monday, she shared a message via the Masterpiece PBS Twitter account.
