Mulcair is campaigning in British Columbia, where days ago a raging blaze tore through the province’s Interior, destroying dozens of homes and forcing hundreds to flee at a moment’s notice.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair is promising to inject a “modest” nine-million dollars into natural disaster prevention and relief as Western Canada reels from one of its worst wildfire seasons on record.
The New Democrats first unveiled the policy plank last fall.

He says he’s spoken to mothers who say they’re being forced to choose between their careers and their children.
Sheila Malcolmson, NDP candidate for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding, said she sees the role of federal government as partnering with local crews and provincial governments to improve the ability to respond in “a time of increased climate change and more firefighting risk”.
He said the lack of reliable child care is estimated to cost B.C. businesses more than $600 million per year, again citing the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

Mulcair is scheduled for another campaign stop in Winnipeg Thursday afternoon.
