Israel threatens Syria after rocket fire

Israel says some of the attacks have been accidental spillover from the Syrian conflict while others have been intentionally aimed at Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Four rockets fired from war-wracked Syria struck northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights today, causing fires but no injuries, the Israeli military and security sources said.

A monitoring group had earlier reported casualties.

Last month, a malfunction triggered air raid sirens across Israel’s north, sending residents into bomb shelters.

The Jewish state has avoided taking sides in the civil war in neighbouring Syria, though it has responded occasionally to attacks.

Media reports in Syria said at least four Israeli shells were fired at Syrian military positions in the Quneitra area in the Syrian Golan.

Allaan ended his hunger strike Thursday afternoon and was said to be recovering his health, after being hospitalized in critical condition over the weekend. A monitor initially reported casualties but did not elaborate.

It was referring to a Palestinian militant group which is based in the Gaza Strip.

Hours after the attack, the IDF said it fired artillery shells at several Syrian targets adjacent to the Israeli border.

Allan had refused food in protest at being detained without trial by Israel.

The Islamic Jihad denied the military’s accusation, saying it was not behind the rocket fire.

Islamic Jihad acknowledges receiving support from Iran, Israel’s arch-foe.

The IDF said it believed the firing was deliberate and that it was considering retaliatory fire.
