Russian Federation hands North America its first loss

If Finland somehow upsets Russian Federation on September 22, that might help Team NA, but they really need to beat Sweden to advance.

Through two games, Team North America has turned into must-watch hockey.

For one night at least, Russia’s skill won out.

The Russians stayed in the game despite the North Americans controlling the fast pace in the first period, and almost extending the lead in the second. “We love hanging out with each other. I think that belief system will be there again and I think we’ll come out and play well”. Everybody’s playing for the team. It was great theater and I could not be happier for the U-23s.

“The whole team has to be prepared to play more minutes, and rise to the challenge and take care of each other defensively, ” Rielly said.

Only two players fell outside of the top 100 – goalie Connor Hellebuyck has the dubious honour of being the lowest National Hockey League pick, going in the fifth round at 130th overall to the Winnipeg Jets in 2012. There might have been relief for the Stars that Benn and Seguin were out of harm’s way and should be ready to go to start the season, but they also felt for a guy who all summer had been looking forward to representing his country.

Russian Federation managed to keep their cool and held off the fast finishing North Americans for a 4-3 win. The period in general was a more desperate affair for Russian Federation as they attempted to try and get anything in on Markstrom. “Like I said in the morning, you’re going to see a different team tonight, and you did”.

“I think that’s obvious, stating the obvious”, Team North America coach Todd McLellan said. Ovechkin attempted one such rush by trying to stickhandle his way around several opposition players, but Auston Matthews easily dispossessed him of the puck, and regrouped for a rush up ice.

“Yesterday when we looked at the game tape with Aaron out, there was a six to eight minute lapse where we didn’t perform well as a team, not necessarily positionally”. North America owned the puck against Finland, which had nine players back from the bronze-medal team in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Unfortunately, the win was not enough to get the Blue Jackets to the championship game, as Detroit nipped St. Louis 2 – 1, giving Detroit the nod in the tie-breaker, based upon their head-to-head victory over Columbus.

“Obviously we knew what we had to do and the point sealed the first spot in the group”, he said.

Tuesday night’s 7:00 game is win or go home for Team America. He wants to see more from players such as Drouin and Jack Eichel, the Buffalo Sabres teenage wunderkind. They couldn’t handle what Team North America was bringing to them, and so they looked as gassed as a team could look.

Gibson stood tall in the final few minutes of the game as Team North America took some chances to get scoring opportunities.

At their best, McLellan said, his kids can beat anyone in the tournament.

“That was the most important shot in my life”, Bobrovsky said.

“Johnny (Gaudreau) made a great pass to me and I just thought I’d put it away because I wouldn’t have been able to backcheck, I would’ve been too exhausted”, said MacKinnon.

We’re two games into the round robin portion of the World Cup, and we’ve already seen a handful of upsets, with favorites like Russian Federation and the United States already tasting defeat, and in the case of the Americans, already being eliminated. And the belief system – there’s a lot of courage in that locker room. But they still believed a comeback was possible.
