ITT Technical Institute closes, students left in limbo

ITT Educational Services announced it is closing all of its ITT Technical Institutes permanently, including campuses in the Milwaukee area.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson sent a letter to King Tuesday. The company says it is working to assist displaced students with their records and education options.

Jessica Whitney, the director of the office’s Consumer Protection Bureau, said the investigation was prompted by concerns over whether ITT was using unfair and deceptive practices in trying to recruit students.

“I also ask that your department fully inform all those affected of their option to refuse a planned teach-out and instead seek forgiveness of their outstanding federal student loans through the Closed School Discharge program”.

More than 130 ITT Technical Institute campuses will be closing in 38 states.

A federal loan discharge would wipe away any federal loan debt incurred while attending ITT Tech. “I know a couple of students, they claimed they came here, they didn’t learn anything”. Therefore, losing its accreditation, which means it loses federal financial aid for students. We communicated with all students this morning informing them of key information including how to receive grades and transcripts, articulation agreements, what other schools are near them that may offer similar programs of study.

As for the students ITT Tech left behind, they are left with student loans and credits that most likely will not transfer.

“We’ve had problems here in Hawaii, we’ve had problems all throughout the country where there’s been a lot of misrepresentations that have been engaged in by these for profit schools”.

ITT Technical Institute has been forced to close all of its locations effective Tuesday, September 6, including the one in Getzville.

FMU said it has dedicated phone lines and staff to advise affected students on the upcoming “Session B”, which begins October 12th.

It also means that taxpayers could be on the hook for millions of dollars in student loans.

The company’s national website says it is no longer enrolling students.
