Curtis Hanson: 1945-2016, Director of LA Confidential Dead at 71

Filmmaker Curtis Hanson, best known for helming ’90s crime thriller “L.A Confidential“, has passed away at the age of 71.

The spokesman said Hanson died of natural causes. Despite being largely overshadowed by Titanic during awards season, the film ultimately won two Oscars: Best Supporting Actress for Kim Basinger and Best Adapted Screenplay for Hanson and Brian Helgeland.

“So sad to hear about Curtis Hanson. great director. great man. Riding that river with him was one of the greatest gigs of my life”, tweeted Kevin Bacon, Streep’s villainous co-star in “The River Wild”.

Hanson’s final film was the 2012 autobiographical surfing drama “Chasing Mavericks”, which he was forced to bow out of late in production due to due to complications from a recent heart surgery. “I’m lucky I got to know him”.

Although Hanson directed several films during the “80s (including the Tom Cruise sex comedy Losin” It), he truly came into his own in the early ’90s with a string of successful thrillers.

Hollywood actors and actresses are taking to social media to remember Hanson and the fearless stories he took on.

Hanson as well said that he was conscious not to box the film in as a “rap movie”. He started his directing career in the 70s and received recognition later in his career with The Hand That Rocks the Cradle in 1992.

Michael Apted completed the picture, and Hanson never directed a film again.

“8 Mile” star Eminem was one of the many celebrities to honor Hanson after the news broke.

The Nevada born director made his debut with “Sweet Kill” starring Tab Hunter in 1972. Many people are remembering the great works of art that Curtis Hanson has made during his productive and challenging career.

In 2011, the TV movie Hanson directed for HBO about the financial crisis of 2008, “Too Big To Fail”, was nominated for multiple Emmys, including outstanding TV movie and outstanding direction.
