As many as five potential explosive devices tumbled out of the backpack when it was emptied, Bollwage said.

The Telegraph also printed a statement from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump: “It’s a awful thing what’s going on in our world, what’s going on in our country, but we are going to get tough and smart and vigilant and we are going to end it”.

Late on Saturday, a powerful explosion rocked Manhattan’s popular Chelsea neighborhood when a pressure-cooker bomb packed with shrapnel detonated.

Here is more footage of the first device exploding.

Following the detonation of an explosive device in Manhattan Sunday night that left 29 people injured, two men found a suspicious device in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Christian Bollwage said that up to five pipe bombs were discovered in a backpack at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. The bag had wires and a pipe protruding from it. The FBI was leading the investigation and working to disarm the other four devices. It wasn’t immediately clear if the apartment had any connection to the blast.

Security had already been tightened in the city for the ongoing UN General Assembly, but the presence of officers throughout New York City after the blast will be “bigger than ever”, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

All trains going through Elizabeth station on both New Jersey Transit and Amtrak lines have been suspended, according to the respective transportation agencies.

The NJ Transit station was evacuated and the surrounding area shut down after the “suspicious package”, was found Sunday night, NBC News’ Tom Winter reports.

On Saturday, a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park – about 67 miles south of Elizabeth – along the route of a charity race for military veterans. Officials said it didn’t appear that those two incidents were connected, though they weren’t ruling anything out.

This is an ongoing story and updates will be provided as they become available.

Authorities said Sunday night that surveillance video shows what appears to be the same person moving bombs into place at the site of the NY explosion, and a few blocks north. Five people were reportedly being held for questioning in NY in possible relation to the attacks.
