The two parties agreed terms on the new contract in May, but despite the delay in announcing the deal, they have confirmed that it will finally be signed and sealed by the end of this week.

When that deal expires the Spaniard, who has been capped 90 times by his country will be just weeks away from turning 33 but the deal also includes the option of a further two-year extension taking him through to the age of nearly 35.

Since breaking into Pep Guardiola’s first team in 2008, Busquets’ selfless role in midfield has seen him play an integral role in the most successful period in Barca’s history.

Manchester City had been among those linked with a move for the holding midfielder, but his buyout clause has been reportedly set at €200m as part of the new deal.

Since making his bow eight years ago, Busquests has helped Barca to three Champions Leagues, six La Liga titles, four Spanish cups, three Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and five Spanish Super Cups. For Spain he has also won two European Championships and a World Cup.
