Champions League: Gunners stop PSG in Paris

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was satisfied with his side after last night’s 1-1 draw away at Paris Saint-Germain.

With 11 minutes of the first half remaining, PSG should have doubled their advantage when Monreal’s interception fell inviting for Cavani but after taking the ball past Ospina, he sent his shot wide of an open goal.

But they hung on, with goalkeeper David Ospina in fine form, and Alexis Sanchez struck with 12 minutes to go to seal a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has told the Daily Mail he applauds Arsene Wenger’s decision to drop Petr Cech for David Ospina in the Champions League.

“Ospina was very good and he will have shown tonight for those who doubted him that he is a good goalkeeper”, added Wenger.

Walcott endured a hard campaign a year ago as he completely lost his form during the run in but he’s started this season positively and has a goal and an assist to his name from his four Premier League starts so far.

But they bounced back and restored parity in the last part of the game that also saw striker Olivier Giroud being sent off by referee Viktor Kassai. Against Paris Saint-Germain though, the two looked like they’d never played together, and Coquelin, the more defensive of the two, was often caught inexplicably high up the pitch.

Giroud will miss their home game against Basel in the Champions League, with Lucas Perez likely to be given a look-in for his European debut.

“As I said before, I think we played a great game but we have to be better in front of goal. If they change, I’ll tell them”. “But they know what the roles of the season are”.

Speaking after the game, Cavani said: “We played a great game”.

PSG were boosted by the return of centre back Thiago Silva who made his first appearance of the season after a hip injury.

“Afterwards, Marquinhos pushed me from behind and after another time on the ground”.

“For me, to play in the Champions League with my boyhood club was a dream come true”. He wasn’t the best but I said that the first thing is creating the chances.
