Kerry on Syria: Feels Like I’m in ‘Parallel Universe’ to Russia’s Lavrov
The U.S. has said that successful joint operations with Russian Federation in Syria against extremist groups could lead to a political transition away from the Assad regime.

The UN had no choice but to stop further aid supplies, adding to the unbelievable suffering of the people of Aleppo.
Shortly after the truce ended, a United Nations aid convoy was hit, killing 20 humanitarian workers and destroying 18 trucks carrying food for desperate civilians in Aleppo province.
The United Nations responded by suspending its aid operations in Syria.
Speaking at a UN Security Council high-level meeting on Syria on Wednesday, Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura insisted the conflict would not be resolved militarily.
He said the attack on the aid convoy raised doubts over whether Russian Federation and the Syrian government could live up to the terms of the ceasefire deal. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the convoy strike as a “sickening, savage and apparently deliberate attack”.
Khan Tuman is near Orum al-Kubrah, the town where an attack on aid trucks and a warehouse killed around 20 civilians on Monday, triggering a war of words between major powers after Washington accused Moscow of responsibility. UOSSM said the nurse later died of her injuries. Aircraft from Syria, Russia and the US-led coalition are targeting the Fatah al-Sham Front, which along with the Islamic State group was excluded from a weeklong cease-fire.
Both Moscow and Damascus have denied involvement.
On Tuesday, the two diplomats had met with more than a dozen Arab and European foreign ministers, hoping to hold onto what might be salvageable from a week of relative calm in Syria.
A US-Russian cease-fire that went into effect nine days ago has all but collapsed. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Wednesday the Predator drone, which took off from the Incirlik base in Turkey, flew into the area where the convoy was attacked near the Syrian city of Aleppo minutes before it came under fire.
Two Russian Sukhoi SU-24 warplanes were in the skies above the aid convoy at the exact time it was struck late on Monday, two USA officials told Reuters, citing United States intelligence that led them to conclude Russia was to blame. Focused on protecting key aid routes in northern Syria, it was unclear if Russian Federation and Syria would agree.
The UN estimates that some six million Syrians live in besieged and hard-to-reach areas.
The gaping rift between the U.S. and Russian Federation over the war in Syria has been publicly exposed as the two countries accused the other of allowing a scrappy, days-old ceasefire to fall apart.
A strike on a Syrian Red Crescent aid convoy earlier this week prompted global condemnation.
“The strikes on the 16th of September by the coalition against the government positions in Deir el- Zor were a clear violation of the cessation of hostilities and, immediately after those strikes, ISIL began assaults against the government forces”, Lavrov told the Security Council.

“Currently, the Russian naval deployment to the east Mediterranean consists of no less than six battleships and three or four support vessels”, minister Sergei Shoigu said, Russian news agencies reported.
