Champion Liam Smith relishing underdog status ahead of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fight

“When you strip him down and forget he is one of the biggest names in boxing, he is a very good fighter but he isn’t out of this world”.

“I fear no one”, said Alvarez, BoxingJunkie’s No. 7 pound-for pound fighter.

Smith’s three brothers are all professional boxers; his younger brother Callum is also a British champion and has been earmarked as a future world champion, and his older brothers Paul and Stephen are also former British champs and world title challengers.

With an estimated attendance of 40,000 for the fight, it will be almost twice as many more spectators than Smith has fought in front of before.

‘He’s gonna have to deal with that, but I can’t really expect American fans to pick me to win when I’ve never fought in America.

Smith fell to 23-1 with one drawn and 13 knockouts.

Canelo, whose sole defeat in 49 fights was to ring legend Floyd Mayweather in 2013, is rated 1/12 with bookmakers. He’s the face of boxing – Saturday’s event broke the AT&T Stadium attendance record set by Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey in 2008 – and will fight Golovkin when the time is right.

Britain’s Liam Smith has asked for “respect” from the judges in his fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez of Mexico as both men weighed in right on the 11-stone light middleweight limit.

“We know what Liam brings, it’s a very tough fight but that’s what we prepare for”, Alvarez said at the pre-fight news conference with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones front and center at his showplace stadium where less than a sellout crowd is expected.

In a post-fight interview, Smith conceded: “If I would have waited a little longer and gotten more experience I would have been able to fight a guy like that better”.

“I was slow and I had no timing”, added the 28-year-old, who suffered a bad cut in training a month out from the fight and had been unable to spar in the run-up.

There’s no reason to assume that Sadam Ali is damaged goods, but he’ll need to prove that tonight against a seemingly overmatched foe in Saul Corral. Alvarez won with a knock out in the ninth round. We know he is unsafe and we are not underestimating him.

“We are a team and I’m not going to blame my promoter or anyone else but I fear no-one”.

However, Canelo (47-1-1-KO33), whose sole defeat was to Floyd Mayweather via a points decision, is adamant he wants the fight and says the undefeated knockout specialist should be the one to be anxious.
