Katie died in Kentucky in her own bed, surrounded by family on Thursday morning. She had said she didn’t know if she could go to the family event after that but just as Dalton had given me the strength to get through the last few day, he had given her the strength knowing it would be her last outing. Katie received a lung transplant past year and has since developed lymphoma and had kidney failure. They met on Facebook when they were 18 years old and bonded over their battle with cystic fibrosis.

Dalton had Burkholderia cepacia, a highly contagious infection for people with cystic fibrosis.

Katie had been in hospice care in her Flemingsburg, Kentucky, home since September 7. “That was definitely something I had to think about, but when you have those feelings, you just know”.

Katie did contract Burkholderia cepacia, and the husband and wife waited for transplants at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dalton Prager moved back to Missouri after a lung transplant in 2014 so his parents could care for him. Dalton seemed to do well at first after his transplant, but then developed lymphoma. She was in and out of the hospital, and earlier this month doctors told her there was nothing more they could do. Dalton had hoped to get will enough to visit Katie again.

Dalton, who’s from St. Charles County, died last weekend at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, surrounded by family while FaceTiming his wife.

“It gave me some of the best years of my life”, she said.

The last time Katie and Dalton saw each other in person was on July 16, their fifth wedding anniversary.

She even knew how their fairy tale would end.
