The 25-year-old had surrendered only eight earned runs in his previous five starts, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 11 with 8 2/3 innings of four-hit, shutout pitching.

RED SOX 5, ORIOLES 2 (at Baltimore) – David Ortiz broke open a tight game with a three-run homer in the seventh inning and Boston beat the Orioles for its sixth straight victory.

“You can’t worry about playoffs and all this other crap, you got to just go out there and understand that if you take care of business good things happen”.

The Mets began the day with a one-game edge over San Francisco and St. Louis for the top wild-card spot.

Washington’s run differential (+147), is the second-best in the NL as well, behind only, again, Chicago (+232). “I wish we could have got him a win”.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a three-run homer and Trea Turner also homered for the Nationals.

“This start had way more positives and that’s what I’m going to focus on”, Scherzer said.

In that outing, he allowed three runs and three hits in one inning.

Scherzer said he felt like his stuff was clicking from the beginning: his fastball, curveball and cutter were “clicking”. I don’t know how it came out because I don’t read much, but that was inaccurate reporting.

Washington scored its first run when Koehler’s pick-off throw to second went into centerfield and Yelich was unable to field it cleanly allowing Danny Espinosa to score.

Espinosa walked to lead off the top of the third, moved into scoring position on a sac bunt, took third on an errant pick attempt by Marlins’ starter Tom Koehler, then kept running when Christian Yelich misplayed the ball in center, 1-0.

Washington made it 4-0 with Zimmerman’s two-out home run to left. “Every time that he seemed to pitch, we got seven or eight runs and didn’t really pitch that great …”

Jayson Werth had an RBI single and Turner hit his 12th home run for a 6-0 advantage. “Medical says he felt he needed a day so we gave a day”, Mattingly said.

Freeman, whose first child was born September 15, brings a career-best 25-game hitting streak into the series opener as Atlanta – which has won five in a row – hopes to continue its better play as the 2016 season draws to a close.

Bryce Harper starts the night 10 for 29, .345/.441/1.000 with a double and six home runs vs Marlins’ starter Tom Koehler in their respective careers. Urena allowed seven runs in two innings in his last start at Philadelphia.
