Polls close in UK Labour Party’s divisive leadership vote

However, should Mr Corbyn beat challenger Owen Smith in the leadership contest, he has insisted that his leadership style is unlikely to change.

He said: “All Labour party members and MPs have a responsibility to work within the democracy of our party and respect the leadership of whoever is elected”.

Ian Murray urged Mr Corbyn to offer an “olive branch” to the Parliamentary Labour by restoring shadow cabinet elections.

The Left wing journalist backed Corbyn last time with gusto but has struck a more sceptical tone in this leadership contest, warning some on Labour’s Left are more interested in “proving how Left wing they are” than winning power.

He said: “Regardless of the outcome I will want to work with Owen Smith and all members of our party”.

The film, entitled “In conversation with Jeremy Corbyn” shows the veteran left-winger at events with supporters, and giving speeches at a campaign rally.

“The party has ended up pre-New Labour in policy and culture, when we need to be post-New Labour”.

On the day millions of people in Labour’s traditional heartlands ignored its call to back a Remain vote.

He called for an end to the “sniping and personal attacks” and warned that “anything else would be destructive self-indulgence”.

“I don’t think there’s more difference in policies”, Chapman told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Mr Corbyn has urged the party to unite around him, if he is declared the victor when the result of Labour’s leadership contest is announced on Saturday. The NEC meets on Saturday and we’ll have further discussions at that point.

The Islington MP and infrequent supporter of the last Labour government will succeed because he knows what all these new Labour Party members want to hear and he is more than happy to oblige.

Next week’s annual conference in Liverpool will be “the turning point” for Labour, he predicted.

Mr Miliband also criticised Mr Corbyn’s domestic policies, warning that nationalisation “cannot be the answer to everything”. “We are going to do even better”.

Mr Miliband, who is now based in NY and is head of the International Rescue Committee which deals with the global refugee crisis, added: “There is one other element that is not only undesirable, but disastrous”.

These divisions continued as Labour’s national executive committee failed to reach consensus on how to appoint its shadow cabinet, after almost nine hours of talks.

He said the distinction between being appointed to the shadow cabinet and being voted on to it is “you would be elected by your peers”.

He has instead suggested a system where party members would also have a say on shadow cabinet elections.

“It’s really important that does happen and that people who have been extremely abusive are not members of the party”.

Top director Ken Loach has made a documentary about Mr Corbyn’s leadership campaign.

But after a divisive leadership contest, Corbyn has pledged to “wipe the slate clean” and work with critics within the party if re-elected.

Graham Sharpe, a spokesman for bookmakers William Hill, added: “All of the serious money staked from a £60,000 bet downwards, has been for a convincing Corbyn victory”.
