Per Deadline, ABC has set up a script commitment for the sequel series, attached to Leverage creator John Rogers and Eva Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment.

The series will follow Lily “Tommy” Magnum, “who returns to Hawaii to take up the mantle of her father’s PI firm”, according to Deadline, which reported the news Thursday. Also, there will be some kind of ongoing mystery about “the blown spy operation” that ended Lily Magnum’s Navy Intelligence career, because millennials like serialized stories and daughters of classic TV characters.

Television is full of reboots and revivals these days, so why not add “Magnum, P.I.” to the mix? No word yet on who will be cast for the title role, but it’s unlikely to be Kristen Carreira, who played the character in six episodes of the original series. She was raised by her mother, Magnum’s presumed dead wife, Michele, and her second husband. It’s unclear whether Selleck will reprise his role in some fashion, although given the show’s premise it would seem likely.

“We knew no one could replace the iconic role of Thomas Magnum, so John chose to make the reboot a sequel and continue the adventure of a Magnum – his daughter, who was established in the original series”, Longoria and Spector stated.

But fans of Tom Selleck need not hold their breath; the new incarnation will have a female lead – Magnum’s now grown-up daughter Lily.
