Charlotte Protester on Life Support After Shooting Occurs During Unrest
The press conference started at 10:30 a.m.at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, located on East Fourth Street. “So we’re investigating that to find the truth, the absolute truth, as best the evidence can show us”.

Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts, also at the press conference, called the last two days “difficult” for the city. However, most body-camera and dash-camera videos depicting police shootings are not released by police departments until after the formal investigation of the incident is complete, a process that can stretch for months and in some cases years. “They are not reflective of our community, of the deep-seated traditions we have of collaboration and peace”, she said. The police have said the 43-year old was carrying a handgun the second time he stepped out of his vehicle, and refused to put down the weapon upon being asked; Scott’s family says he was in his auto reading.
Charlotte’s reluctance to release the video stands in contrast to Oklahoma, where officials on Monday released footage of the fatal shooting of Terence Crutcher by police after his vehicle broke down on a highway. But Putney said the footage he has reviewed does not provide “definitive visual evidence that would confirm that a person is pointing a gun”.
NAACP members reiterated their request to have the video released. In the video below from about 9:15 p.m., a man can be seen driving his shoulder into CNN’s Ed Lavandera, who was knocked to the ground. But he added: “When taken in the totality of all the other evidence, it supports what we said”.
As a kid, Vinson dreamed of becoming a police officer and following in his father’s footsteps, his former middle school football coach told The Charlotte Observer. In the footage, she is at the cordoned-off shooting scene, yelling at officers. Vinson was reportedly wearing plain clothes and a clearly marked CMPD vest.
“I think what we went through with Kerrick here in Charlotte, even though it wasn’t as explosive, I think that weathered on us”, local activist Jibril Hough told the Washington Post.
“I would like to think that but I can tell you this. there’s your truth, my truth and the truth”, the police chief said. Neighbors, though, have said that he was holding only a book. Angry demonstrators demanding justice for Scott have looted businesses, damaged property and injured officers, police said. One person was shot.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -Workers swept up glass and police officers patrolled the misty downtown streets Thursday morning, as they sought to restore order after officials said riots Wednesday night left one protester on life support. The 40-year-old is seen with his hands up, appearing to comply with police officers before he is shot once by officer Betty Shelby and falls to the ground. Per Chief Putney’s comments early today, officers used tear gas on the crowd following the shooting. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency Wednesday night and called in the National Guard after the police chief said he needed the help.
The looting and vandalism marked a second night of mayhem in North Carolina’s largest city.
“No matter if it’s justified or unjustified, it’s tough when you have to know that you had to take someone else’s life”, Scurlock said. At least eight more civilians and four officers were injured and 44 people arrested for charges ranging from assault to failure to disperse. Two of the officers suffered eye injuries and three others were treated for heat exhaustion.
Protests are expected to continue Thursday night and police will have several hundred additional officers and they will “be a lot more proactive”, Putney said.
Others who say they witnessed the shooting accuse police of lying, both about who killed 43-year-old Mr Scott and the circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s shooting.
