Police Chief Kerr Putney said video from the scene showed that Scott had a gun, though he said it wasn’t clear if Scott was pointing the gun at officers.

The protesters were marching Wednesday to denounce the police shooting of African American Keith Lamont Scott, killed in the city on Tuesday night.

District Attorney Andrew Murray, the chief state prosecutor in Charlotte, said in a statement Thursday that he was asking for a state investigation into the shooting as requested by Scott’s family.

The decision to withhold the video footage from the public was criticised by the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People and clergy members from the Charlotte area. A police spokesman saw the footage said it does not show police misconduct. “Hopefully we will have peaceful protests and do things the Charlotte way”. Police claimed the man had emerged from a auto with a gun and was threatening them, while family members said he was sitting in a vehicle reading a book. However, three other officers were, and that footage has unsurprisingly become a point of contention for both sides. He has been placed on leave, standard procedure in such cases.

“This has been a hard couple of days for the City of Charlotte”.

Video of the shooting has not been released. “I didn’t see the guy”, he elaborated. I don’t know how complete it is.

A CNN reporter was attacked by a rioter during the protests in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A state of emergency has been declared in Charlotte, and National Guard troops and state police have been called in to help maintain the peace.

One man was shot and killed as protesters gathered near police in riot gear at an upscale downtown Charlotte hotel on Wednesday night. He added: “People have the right to know”.

Bamberg said he has not seen any evidence that would indicate a gun was present at the scene of the shooting. The jury deadlocked and the charge was dropped last summer.

Stores have been destroyed and looted during the two nights of protests across the city. One civilian is in critical condition after being shot by another person. Fourteen people, including five people offices, have been injured in the clashes. The NASCAR Hall of Fame was among the places damaged.

Police have identified the officer involved in the shooting as Brentley Vinson, who has been employed with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department since July 21, 2014, and is now assigned to the metro division.

“We need a curfew”, she said, “because some of the young folks need to get off the streets”. She said he often waited there for his son because a bicycle accident several years ago left him stuttering and susceptible to seizures if he stayed out in the hot sun too long.

The Scott family was scheduled to be at a news conference held outside the Mecklenburg County Courthouse earlier Thursday, but did not appear. Putney told ABC News the video that shows Scott had a gun in his hand. “What I can tell you is that when taken with the totality of all the other evidence, it supports what we’ve heard and the version of the truth that we gave about the circumstances of what happened that led to the death of [Keith Scott]”, he said.
