Around 250000 Galaxy Notes Exchanged in US, Samsung Says

South Korea ordered Samsung Electronics to conduct more security checks on the new batteries in its Galaxy Note 7 before putting the phones back on the market.

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, in a statement, formally approved the recall plan and said the new batteries being used are safe.

The agency asked Samsung earlier this week to say how long it could extend the refund period for consumers who missed Monday’s deadline.

Galaxy Note 7 ran into trouble in many countries over reports of its battery issues, causing the phone to explode or catch fire. Some customers tried to fake their way onto receiving a new handset, with one sending a picture of a burned Note 7 they found online, and the other claiming they threw the device out of their auto when it caught fire – but couldn’t show proof.

Samsung’s upcoming Android 7.0 update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will include the company new Grace user interface and an improved Always On Display feature, according to a new report.

This first batch of replenishment stock is intended exclusively for exchanges; Samsung hasn’t yet said when Note 7 retail sales will officially resume, probably in October.

The product safety agency said Samsung had also agreed to send text messages to individual Note 7 users who still have not exchanged their possible risky phones for new ones.

Samsung has just announced that it has shipped 500,000 replacement Galaxy Note 7 devices to USA retailers and carriers.

Samsung had on September 2, 2016, announced an official Galaxy Note7 replacement programme due to a rare battery cell manufacturing error which had led to a few reported incidents. The commission website said consumers can get a refund or a new replacement device and it did not say if there is a deadline for getting a refund. The replacement devices will be made available starting September 21 to people who previously bought the Galaxy Note7 and need to exchange it for one with a known-safe battery.
