New explosion in New Jersey as police discover 5 suspicious devices

In the other New Jersey incident, investigators discovered three pipe-bomb-type devices wired together, but no one was wounded. No injuries were reported, but nearby structure were damaged, and the blast was treated as a possible terror act.

The men took the backpack because “they thought it was of some value”, but alerted the police when they saw wires and a pipe coming of the package, said Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage, according to reports. Also on Saturday, a pipe bomb went off before a New Jersey charity run at a seashore resort an hour away from the Elizabeth train station.

Passengers should be prepared for the possibility of additional cancellations and delays throughout the day today, Amtrak said.

Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor service is operating on a modified schedule. “I know there are other devices, but I don’t know what they are made up of but they are going to have to be removed and all the fragments from the other pieces will have to be picked up so the FBI can investigate this fully”.

The latest New Jersey investigation is underway amid heightened tensions after a blast in New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood injured 29 people Saturday, four blocks from the discovery of a second bomb that was defused safely and sent to authorities for examination.

The FBI is asking anyone with information to contact authorities at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

But, he told CBS News, the men didn’t see who dropped the device in the trash.

A spokesman for New Jersey Mayor Chris Bollwage said the explosion was a controlled detonation, but at a news briefing a few minutes later, Bollwage said the robot was “cutting into the device when it exploded”.

As many as five potential explosive devices tumbled out of the backpack when it was emptied, Bollwage said. The drone indicated that the package could contain a “live bomb”, Bollwage said at a press conference.

She wouldn’t provide further details, but a government official and a law enforcement official who were briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press that five people in the vehicle were being questioned at an FBI building in lower Manhattan.

Authorities said they are searching for Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, in connection to the explosion in Chelsea on Saturday night. “No Amtrak trains are operating on the Northeast Corridor between NY and Trenton, NJ for the time“.
