Suspect of NY blast arrested

His dramatic arrest came just hours after officials plastered his photo on a wanted poster, saying Rahami was wanted for questioning in connection with Saturday’s blast that injured 29 people in New York City and an explosion that occurred near a charity race in Seaside Park, New Jersey, earlier that day.

NEW YORK (AP) – The man suspected of planting bombs in a New York neighborhood and a New Jersey seaside town may have aimed to inflict carnage incognito, but he didn’t succeed for long in concealing his identity.

Rahami was identified by investigators using the cellphone attached on the explosive device made out from a pressure cooker, as well as his fingerprints left on the device, according to authorities. They said he worked there until September 12, but didn’t identify the store.

President Barack Obama, speaking in NY, said officials did not believe there was a connection between events in NY and New Jersey and a stabbing attack in Minnesota, also on Saturday, in which nine people were injured.

Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the leg, and two officers were wounded but were not believed to be seriously hurt in the shootout that followed a weekend of fear and dread across NY and beyond. “Cops are the real heroes, law enforcement are the real heroes”, said Mr Bains, who, news reports said, was being praised as a “hero”.

“I’m not sure what’s going on exactly”, he said.

Rahami also is charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful goal.

Officials said they have no other suspects at large, but cautioned they are still investigating.

– In a Facebook post Monday, a family member asked for privacy.

– During that time, the official said, Ahmad Rahami also traveled by auto to Afghanistan as well. He was the subject of a massive manhunt launched in connection with two explosions, one each in NY and New Jersey, and planting two lots of explosives.

A foot chase ensued, during which Rahami shot at a police auto, causing a bullet to graze another officer in the face.

William Sweeney, the FBI’s assistant director in NY, said on Monday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had gotten a report of a domestic incident involving Rahami some time ago, but the allegations had been recanted, and “there’s nothing to indicate that now he was on our radar”.

The FBI never interviewed Ahmad Rahami, according to officials.

Rahami lived with his family above their fried-chicken restaurant in Elizabeth, and his relatives have clashed with the city over closing times and noise complaints they said were tinged with anti-Muslim sentiment.

– Rahami majored in criminal justice at Middlesex County College in Edison, New Jersey, school spokesman Tom Peterson said.

The reason for the trip and its full impact on Rahami was not immediately known, but Jones said Rahami became more serious and quiet. Some friends said he was amusing and friendly. “That’s what’s so scary”.

– Two sources tell NPR that a note mentioning the Boston Marathon bombers and radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was found near an undetonated bomb found on West 27th Street in New York City.

No one was injured in the other blasts.

With Rahami’s arrest, officials said they have no indication there are more bombs or suspects to find, though they cautioned that they are still working to understand Rahami’s connections.

Authorities believe that Ahmad Khan Rahami is responsible for multiple bombs placed in NY and New Jersey over the weekend. The law enforcement officials said at least one of Rahami’s relatives was in the auto. Police were looking into whether he was radicalized overseas, CNN said.

Sweeney would only say that they connected those two explosions through “evidence and analysis”.

The men had reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package, Mr Bollwage said.

An officer arrived and confronted Rahami, who pulled a gun and fired, authorities said. More officers joined in a battle that spilled into the street. The officers’ injuries weren’t life-threatening.
