Schools superintendent Debra Livingston and Manchester police Chief Nick Willard said in a joint release that the student turned over the weapon without incident.

The school district said “at no time” were students or staff at risk.

The 16-year-old boy posted a photo on social media of a handgun with a statement saying he would make history, Sun Prairie police Lt. Brian Teasdale said.

Police said the student will be charged, and the school will take disciplinary action.

Other schools in the district were put on exterior lockdown as a precaution. Law enforcement immediately investigated and determined that the person was not located in the DeForest Area High School.

Authorities said the DeForest High school was locked down at about 2:15 p.m.

DEFOREST (WKOW) — DeForest School District says that the lockdown has been lifted. After lockdown, police determined that the student was not in the building but in a neighboring community.

All Thursday school district activities will go on as scheduled. DASD said the lockdown was lifted at 3 p.m.

Sun Prairie police said the student was taken into custody, and a criminal investigation is in progress. We are cooperating with law enforcement, who is on site, as they determine whether or not this is a credible threat.
