The first League Cup clash was in 1969 at the semi-final stage, City winning the first leg 2-1 at Maine Road and the second leg at Old Trafford ended 2-2 as the Blues progressing to the final.
Regarding the match, which will come just six weeks after United’s 2-1 home loss to Pep Guardiola’s city, Rooney said: “For me, I think it’s the ideal draw”.
Liverpool were a class apart from Derby as they beat the Rams 3-0 and now welcome Spurs to Anfield.
EFL Cup results: Fulham 1-2 Bristol City; Northampton Town 1-3 Manchester United; Queens Park Rangers 1-2 Sunderland; Southampton 2-0 Crystal Palace; Stoke City 1-2 Hull City; Swansea City 1-2 Manchester City; West Ham 1-0 Accrington; Tottenham 5-0 Gillingham.
West Ham needed a 96 minute free kick victor from Dimitri Payet to get past League Two side Accrington Stanley 1-0 last night.
Elsewhere in the competition, Chelsea take on West Ham while Arsenal host Reading.
Instead, it’s Pep’s City just six weeks after the Premier League leaders won so convincingly 2-1.
